Church Organization

Presbyterian congregations are governed by a board of elders elected by the members. Elders are known as persons of faith, dedication, and good judgement. This governing body in the Presbyterian church is named the "Session."

The Session is responsible for all aspects of the life of the congregation. At Druid Hills, the Session is composed of 12 elders, with four elders elected each year and serving for three years on a rotating basis.

The Session is charged with oversight of the welfare of the congregation, its ministries, and its property. To accomplish this, the Session is divided into "ministry teams" that each specialize in oversight of a particular area.

Meetings are led by the Session's Moderator, who is the Pastor of the church. The Moderator insures the proceedings are conducted "decently and in order," giving all Session members the opportunity to express their concerns and beliefs, referring matters to the appropriate ministry team for further research and evaluation, and supervising voting on recommendations brought before the meetings.

In addition to the Moderator and ministry teams, the Session has a Clerk, elected by members of the Session each year. The Clerk is responsible for the official records of the congregation including minutes of Session meetings, membership rosters, and receiving and sending official correspondence of the congregation. The Clerk also interfaces with higher governing bodies within the Presbyterian Church (Presbytery, Synod, and General Assembly), and is sometimes called upon to represent the congregation at public gatherings or in correspondence.

The Session also elects the church's Treasurer, who is an officer of the congregation responsible for the day-to-day financial matters of the congregation including the accurate posting of all contributions from members, payment of all obligations, and the orderly maintenance of all financial records.
