flower cross 2012

worship service easter 1

The Easter lily cross is a longstanding tradition at DHPC.  Filled with lilies at the peak of bloom, the

cross graces the chancel area in the Sanctuary on Easter Sunday.  The Worship Team plans and oversees placing the cross and designing and installing other items of liturgical significance in the Sanctuary for Easter. And everyone was also invited to bring flowers from their yards to place on the cross on the front lawn to celebrate spring's renewal of life and the beauty of God's creation.

This year, folks gathered Friday evening late and early Saturday morning to place the lilies in the cross and install crowns and veils in the arches between the buttresses that frame the sanctuary's majestic stained glass windows.  These artistic expressions designed and placed by our members contributed to a joyous celebration at our Easter worship service.  They also provided us an opportunity to gather as friends, sharing our gifts and talents to celebrate our gratitude for God's love at Easter.

Enjoy more in our Easter photo album!

Church Note:

The following is a short biography from new affilate member Carol Seaton. Welcome, Carol!

I was born and reared in Little Rock, Arkansas with two older brothers.  I also have a younger brother, who was adopted when I was in college.  I graduated from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkansas with a BS in chemistry.

I graduated from Midwestern Theological Seminary in Kansas City, and worked with four small Presbyterian churches in Kansas City, KS during the four years I was in seminary.  I was ordained there in 1980.I served as associate pastor and pastor in the Kansas City area and also served on the staff of the Presbytery.I served as the Associate for Small Church Development for the General Assembly from 1990-1996.

I moved to Georgia for love, to be with my partner Mickie Williams. Together we developed subdivisions and built work-force housing in middle Georgia. We lived in the Jackson area, on High Falls Lake, and built homes in Barnesville, Jackson, Monticello and Monroe County.

In late 2008, we were ready to get back to the city and closer to family, so we moved to Hapeville. For the last few months, I have been working with our consulting firm, Georgia Housing Consultants, and have just started working for Clayton County as the Manager for the Neighborhood Stabilization Program in the Community Development Department.

Hello! My name is Emily Bridwell. Everyone I know, except my husband, ends up calling me Emmy. That may be because I hear the latter better. Outside of the church, I do not know anyone else who is both hearing impaired and below retirement age. Last October, Jason and I celebrated our seventh anniversary. Our son Gavin is four years old and I am delighted he enjoys his church family so much!

We began volunteering with Journey over two years ago. Gavin helps the visitors feel more comfortable and he LOVES to hand out cookies. More than once, someone has given their share to Gavin. My two favorite interests are psychology and animal medicine. I am on a slow but determinded track to a degree in the first with a focus on the second. In the meantime, I oversee inventory and client education at East Atlanta Animal Clinic; I am fortunate to have found both a career and a company I love.

When Gavin allows me spare time, I enjoy reading, drawing, learning ASL, playing my flute, and watching TV on Hulu. I'm a homebody who loves nature, her family, and helping others. I hope to learn more about all our members during the next year!

Church note:

We welcomed Gavin into our community by baptism on Sunday, March 25. Emmy became a member at DHPC in December, 2011.

Sono Laus Voices United in Song a "Rousing" Success

The second annual SONO LAUS Voices United in Song Invitational Choral Festival was held over the weekend of April 17-18 and culminated in a beautiful performance of Requiem by Gabriel Fauré.

sonolausThis year’s festival featured singers from 12 different churches and community choirs in the greater metropolitan Atlanta area who joined together for a full day of rehearsal and fellowship Saturday, April 17.

As festival founder and artistic director, I was pleased with the number of guests who were welcomed into the Druid Hills community for the first time. It was a pleasure for me to conduct this willing group of singers who started the weekend as strangers an ended it as a community bound together by our experiences through the music. The choir and professional orchestra was made up of over 50 performers who are not members of the DHPC community. Many of them do not have a regular Sunday morning home. You never know what seeds are planted through our hospitality and interaction with our guests.

The festival participants shared their excitement about the event and many offered written thank you notes, including Whit Matteson who said, “I just wanted to tell you again how much I appreciate that you thought to invite me to participate. The event accomplished exactly what it was advertised as: a chance for serious amateur singers to gather and sing some great music with a great group of orchestral players, with a minimum time commitment.  I don’t get the chance to do that sort of thing very often, and even though my voice doesn’t last as long as it used to, I thoroughly enjoyed getting to sing. I also noticed that the logistics were nicely done, with the details in yesterday’s email, plus the lunch on Saturday, etc. Everything flowed very nicely… I was impressed.”

Jess ChanceyThe mission of DHPC includes celebrating God’s work in the world.  Today we celebrate the ways in which God has been at work in preparing member Jessica Chancey as she explores a potential call to the ministry of Word and Sacrament. At the Presbytery meeting on February 11, 2012, Jess moved into the candidacy phase of preparation (after serving as an “inquirer” for more than a year).

Jess first came to DHPC as a soprano soloist, and we have enjoyed her considerable musical talents.  Thereafter Jess became a member of DHPC, came under the care of our session to explore the possibility of ministry, and is now in her second year as a student at Columbia Theological Seminary.  Last summer Jess served as a pastoral intern in a Presbyterian church in Fairhope, Alabama.  This coming summer Jess will pursue Clinical Pastoral Education as a chaplain at St. Joseph’s Hospital here in Atlanta.

We celebrate all these milestones with Jess.  Please continue to hold Jess in your prayers that she might continue to attend to God’s leading in her life.

We also celebrate the faithful service of member Paula Thweatt as Jess’s liaison.  Paula has provided important support and guidance to Jess through prayer and conversation during this journey of exploration and preparation.

Please join us on February 5 for our annual Kirkin' o' the Tartans worship service. This is a special time to celebrate our denomination's Scottish heritage. Members of the St. Andrew's Society and the Burns Club of Atlanta will again enrich our worship service, and join us at the special reception afterwards in the Parlor.

Members are asked to either provide food and beverages or help with the setup.  To make sure we get enough of everything, we've divided up the responsibilities among groups in the church.  If you don't belong to one of these groups, you could bring some food from any of these categories or contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Feature of quilt design We're back to quilting for the chancel area.  Over the next 3 weeks we'll be adding a different panel each week to reinforce this year's stewardship campaign and our new web site look.

Week 1 (October 16) will feature explore.  Take a close look.  Each quilt is made of of hundreds of pictures of our church and church family.

Let me know if you want to know how we did it (as soon as explore is finished I will post a picture).
